Real Cluster (Special): Mosix vs. EPVM
Average Slowdown (lower is better -- note that Mosix should beat a static strategy!)
Notes:
50 Scenarios Simulated (50 Results Pictured)
The average slowdown over all executions for Mosix was 8.683 on the real cluster. The average slowdown for the Enhanced PVM Strategy was 11.698. The average slowdown for PVM (round robin) was 18.835.
Using the static Enhanced PVM Strategy instead of Mosix added about 35% to the average slowdown on a real system. Using round robin adds about 117%. This suggests the following interpretation of these results:
1) The Enhanced PVM Strategy did somewhat better than expected on the real system.
2) Mosix did significantly better than expected on a real system. This makes sense. The Mosix strategy is experimentally tuned for real systems. Moreover, it is specifically tuned for real systems having the Mosix kernel enhancements, as the test system did.
We extrapolate, suggesting that:
3) The Enhanced Mosix Strategy will do significantly better on a real system, but will maintain roughly the same relationship to Mosix’s performance.
